Are Owls Producers or Consumers?

Owls are considered to be secondary consumers because of the fact that they eat animals like mice and voles which are classified as primary consumers. Primary consumers are simply animals which do not make their own food so they are forced to hunt or gather. Producers like plants get all of the energy and nutrients they need from the sun.

Primary consumers are eaten by secondary consumers such as owls. Animals that eat secondary consumers are classified as tertiary consumers. Owls fall under the broader category of consumers because they must get their own food due to the fact that they cannot produce it themselves like plants which use photosynthesis.
