Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Animals

Are Snakes Warm-Blooded or Cold-Blooded?

Snakes are cold-blooded creatures, just like amphibians. When a certain animal is cold-blooded, it basically means that they are able to adapt their own internal temperature to that of their environment. When a snake is in a cool environment, their body temperature tends to drop rather quickly.

When one of these reptiles is in a warm environment, their body temperature rapidly increases. Although being cold-blooded certainly has its benefits for snakes and other creatures, if one of them is exposed to a cold environment for too long of a time, they will like lose consciousness and eventually die.

Are Snakes Radial or Bilateral?

Snakes have a radial symmetry, meaning that they are symmetrical when a piece of them is cut. Some of the other animals that have a radial symmetry include starfish and even certain flowers. Jellyfish are also prime examples of organisms with a radial symmetry.

These animals are symmetrical from an axis that is located in the center, though this is not always the case. Animals like reptiles and sea creatures are not the only organisms that can have a radial symmetry though; even some viruses have been proven to have a radial symmetry, with coats that are comprised of small protein molecules.

Are Snakes Born With Two Heads?

Although it is true that two-headed snakes do exist, they are extremely rare to find in the wild. Snakes that are born with two heads are actually considered to be conjoined twins, or a single snake with a parasitic twin. While snakes like this are very rare, it happens more with snakes than with almost any other animal on the planet.

There are certain snakes which are born with two heads and share the same stomach, while others have their own separate stomach. When two-headed snakes have separate stomachs, it is not uncommon for one to die because it keeps losing fights over food.

Are Snakes Born Live or Hatched From Eggs?

Snakes, like all reptiles, are hatched from eggs. Sometimes though, certain snakes are born alive with no membrane or egg whatsoever, which is called viviparous. When a pregnant female snake is ready to give birth, she will lift her tail toward the cloaca and the eggs/babies will come out.

There are certain people who keep snakes as pets and have no idea that their female snake is pregnant, as it can sometimes be difficult to recognize the signs until it gives birth. When a snake comes out of the egg, it immediately starts to look for small insects to eat before it is eaten by a predator.

Are Snakes Aggressive?

There are certain snakes, such as rattlers and king cobras, which are more aggressive than others. Typically though, snakes are not aggressive unless they feel as though they are being threatened or hunting for food. When it comes to interacting with people, snakes are usually not very aggressive, unless they feel threatened in some way.

Sometimes encountering a person in the wild is enough for a snake to feel threatened to the point where they will either give a warning sign like hissing or rattling their tail back and forth, or just bite the person outright. The snake’s reaction to a human encounter depends on the type of snake and the circumstances though, so they are not always aggressive.

Are Snakes Active in Winter?

While it is true that snakes are typically less active in winter, this is not always the case. Sometimes it just appears that a snake or some other animal is hibernating when they really may not be. Snakes do not actually hibernate in the winter like bears or other animals, but rather they become much less active and rarely seen by humans.

Sometimes snakes will find a stump hole to slither into until an unseasonably warm day, crawling out to enjoy the warmer weather. Typically though, snakes are not very active in the colder winter months throughout the year.

Are Snakes Afraid of Fire?

So far there is no solid evidence that snakes are especially afraid of fire, and they do have poor eyesight. If you encounter a snake, it is a much better idea to avoid excessive movement, as they are attracted to it. Those who need to keep snakes out of their garden and away from their home might want to try spraying sulfur around the area, as it has been known to keep them at bay.

If you have a snake inside your house, it is recommended that you contact wildlife control as soon as possible. Although fire might seem like a good way to scare away snakes, it is not particularly efficient with an unexpected encounter with one.

Are Snakes Asexual?

Although asexuality has been observed in certain wild snakes, most of these animals go through a mating ritual. Most female snakes instigate this ritual by releasing pheromones as they slither across the ground, attracting mature male snakes which come up to rub their chins against the back of the female snake’s neck; this is the start of the courtship between the snakes.

To show that the female snake is receptive to the male’s advances, she raises her tail. The male snake then raises his tale and wraps it around the female’s. The male snack inserts his sex organ into hers when the time is right and mating begins.

Are Snakes Trainable?

Dogs, cats, and many other types of common household pets can be trained to either obey commands, or perform tricks. However other types of pets are impossible to train, no matter how hard you try.

So what about snakes? Are snakes trainable?

No, snakes are not trainable and will not learn to obey their owner’s commands. They simply do not have the large, highly developed brains that would be required for training.

There are several kinds of snakes, such as pythons, which do have basic forms of pattern recognition. This means that, for instance, they can “learn” when feeding day is and will anticipate it, so long as you are consistent with your feedings. However if you are hoping to get a snake to perform tricks, you will be disappointed to learn that it is simply not possible.

Are Snakes Born With Legs?

One of the most distinctive characteristics of snakes is how they slither back and forth to move around. This sort of movement is accomplished by special scales on the belly on the snake called scutes, which can be moved by muscles attached to the snakes’ ribs. These scales propel the snake forward, causing the slithering motion that we all know.

But do snakes move the same way when they are young? Some people have asked the question: Are snakes born with legs?

No, there is no species of snake that has legs at any point during it’s life.

This confusion probably comes about due to the similarities between snakes and other reptiles (or amphibians) that can have a snake-like appearance and yet do in fact have legs.
