Snakes, like all reptiles, are hatched from eggs. Sometimes though, certain snakes are born alive with no membrane or egg whatsoever, which is called viviparous. When a pregnant female snake is ready to give birth, she will lift her tail toward the cloaca and the eggs/babies will come out.
There are certain people who keep snakes as pets and have no idea that their female snake is pregnant, as it can sometimes be difficult to recognize the signs until it gives birth. When a snake comes out of the egg, it immediately starts to look for small insects to eat before it is eaten by a predator.
