Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Animals

Do Snakes Breathe?

Yes, snakes breathe and require oxygen to survive, just as all aerobic organisms do.

The unique, cylindrical body of the snake makes the anatomical structure and arrangement of their organs quite interesting.

Snakes have 2 lungs, just like humans, but how can they fit?

Rather than being side-by-side, snakes hold the organs that are in pairs (such as lungs) one in front of the other. This allows them to more easily fit inside the body.

Although snakes have 2 lungs, one of them (the left one) is much smaller and often does not function at all. This smaller lung is considered to be a vestigial organ, and some snakes are missing it completely.

Are Snakes Considered Lizards?

Snakes are classified as carnivorous reptiles and are of the Serpentine suborder. Although some people mistake legless lizards for snakes, there are some physical characteristics which distinguish the two from each other; one of these characteristics is the lack of eyelids which legless lizards have, as well as the lack of external ears.

Another way in which some snakes differ from lizards is the fact that some of these reptiles have more joints in their skull, though this is not always the case. Even though many people believe that snakes are also considered lizards, scientifically speaking it simply isn’t true.

Are Snakes Kosher?

There are definitely certain foods which those are of the Jewish faith are allowed to eat and those which they are not, and snake meat falls under the latter category. Some of the other similar types of organisms which are not considered to be kosher include shrimp, catfish, frog, crab, octopus, oyster, snail, and sturgeon.

Typically when one goes to a kosher butcher in their area, they are offered the same types of meats, usually consisting of lamb, beef, and chicken. Snakes are most definitely considered to be a non-kosher food for those who strictly follow the religion of Judaism.

Are Snakes Halal to Eat?

It is not considered to be halal to eat snakes, because practicing Muslims are not allowed to eat any animals which eat other animals, such as these reptiles. It is considered to be “haram” to eat reptiles along with other meat-eating animals. There are certain types of meat which are allowed in the Islamic religion, such as chicken, sheep, lamp, turkey, fish, salmon, shrimp, and cow.

Those who follow the teachings of Islam are only allowed to eating certain types of foods, and that does not include snakes of any kind. Although some snakes do live in the sea, others live and land, and because of that and other things, they are considered “halal”.

Are Snakes Faster Than Humans?

Although most humans can travel at a greater speed than snakes, these reptiles can strike in a split second, before their prey has a chance to react or even know what is going on. Whether or not a snake is faster than a person depends on a few different factors though, including the person and snake in question.

Sea snakes for example, tend to move faster than land snakes, because their natural habitat is in the water. In general though, most terrestrial snakes do not have the same level of speed and stamina which most human beings possess, making them inferior in this sense.

Are Snakes Endangered?

There are certain snakes which are classified as being endangered, with certain ones that are more at risk than others. The Mexican ridge nosed rattle snake is just one of these reptiles that is on the endangered species list, primarily because of disruptions to their natural habitat because of urban development and other problems caused by people.

Another snake that is endangered is the Indian Python, which lives primarily in woodlands as well as forests and valleys. Most of these snakes are endangered because of destruction of their natural habitats by man, leaving them nowhere else to live.

Are Snakes Edible?

Snakes are in fact edible, and when they are cooked properly they can actually taste quite good. It is however important for those who want to try cooking snakes to remove the head, as this is where the venom is. There are certain things one must remember when going about preparing a snake before it can be cooked and eaten, such as to remove all of the insides.

One thing that many people do not know is that shortly after a snake dies, it can still bit someone when they put their hand in or around the mouth. This is why it so important to take caution when removing the head of a venomous snake before cooking it.

Are Snakes Nocturnal or Diurnal?

Snakes are not particularly nocturnal or diurnal; they come out when they can. Because these reptiles are cold-blooded, their body temperature rises or falls depending on their environment. This means that snakes must come out and hunt when they can, because if it is too hot or cold, they cannot survive.

When it is extremely hot or cold outside, snakes tend to be inactive and find a place to cool off or warm up until the temperature becomes milder. These reptiles do not have a set time of the day or night when they are active though; it is just a matter of what the temperature of their environment is like.

Are Snakes Decomposers?

Snakes are considered to be consumers, simply because they eat other animals such as rabbits, mice, and even some insects when they are very young. Examples of decomposers are bacteria as well as fungi. A consumer is simply an organism which feeds on other organisms, because it is unable to produce food for itself.

There are numerous types of organisms, including primary consumers, secondary consumers, decomposers, and producers. A snake would be an example of a secondary consumer, simply because it feeds on other secondary consumers. Primary consumers feed only on producers, such as plants that make their own food through a process known as photosynthesis.

Are Snakes Cannibals?

There are certain snakes which are known for being cannibalistic, such as king snakes. Although most snakes do not exhibit cannibalistic behavior, there are some which have been known to in the wild as well as in captivity. It is important for those who keep snakes as pets to remember that certain types do eat each other sometimes, so they should not be kept together under any circumstances.

For the most part though, snakes are not known for eating each other. The King Snake is one of the few types of snakes which do in fact eat its own kind, though this is not an extremely common occurrence.
