Is a Penguin a Bird, Mammal or Amphibian?

emperor penguinThey are flightless birds. Penguins are often mistaken for mammals or amphibians because they spend a good amount of their lives either on land or swimming in the waters to catch fish. But they are just birds that are unable to fly. Their swimming style resembles flying more than that of other fishes.

penguins are known for the ”flightless birds” but i think that that’s just fine; because humans can fly; it’s impossible. But penguins are one of the most famous animals on earth for everyone’s information. So they must be fish or none!
And penguins are mostly fish because they spend almost their whole lives in water!

Let me break it down in a very simplified manner guys:
Mammals- animals which can produce milk,
Amphibians- refers to frogs and salamanders,
Cold blooded animals- animals which are ectotherms meaning, they cannot produce own body heat and thus, need heat from external sources such as the sun. It is true that reptiles are cold-blooded but, Penguins are not reptiles. The evolutionary trend here is,birds have descended from reptiles but they ARE NOT reptiles.

Why, duh?! I thought, birds, were cold-blooded! I thought, they belonged to the reptile family; and they are cold-blooded. This is how we learn…if you don’t ask-you will not learn, the truth. There is no such thing-as a,”duh”, question…”me”.

Birds dont belong to reptile family… birds are birds.. and birds are warm blooded.. i hope you have got a good education because you shd know this.

If you want to avoid a ‘duh’ you can google up animal kingdom classification to learn more about this.

I think this is really really mean.. but the lack of education here is astounding (means amazing and shocking). Penguin’s are birds (Aves). Their fur like coat is actually really small feathers. Them spending a lot of time in water DOES NOT make them fish, that is completely illogical. Its like saying an Olympic swimmer is a fish.

Birds are technically a descendant of a “reptile”. The reptile group is an odd group after all as some subclasses are actually as sister to one another as they are to mammals. Like crocodiles to turtles are as different as birds are to mammals.

Ladies and gentlemen, please use this amazing platform called Google, it does provide amazing things if you know where to look. Look up credible websites or journal papers, not junk posted by some 8 year old thinking he’s Einstein.

They lay an egg, so most likely not a mammal. I don’t think birds are mammals in general.

No,penguins are not mammals as they are unable to produce milk..However,an exception is the Emperor penguin which can but,in a manner very different from the mammals.

We denote the title MAMMAL to animals which can lactate or,produce milk 😉

Penguins, what are they? Who are they? Where are they from? Why are they? These are all questions that we ask ourselves every day. The answer may be lost in et dimensions of space and may never be uncovered. However we must set all human sources to discover these answers. For life and humanity. There are many different animal classes and every animal in the world belongs to one of them. The five most well known classes of vertebrates (animals with backbones) are mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians.
Penguins are birds, even though they spend time on land and in water. Their motion in the water more closely resembles flying than the swimming motion used by other animals.
Like other birds, penguins have feathers. Penguin feathers are short, dense, and packed so tightly together that they often look like smooth skin.

Many of you have such flawed logic it’s laughable. Spending time in the water DOES NOT make an animal a fish or an amphibian or anything other than what its physical characteristics are classed as.
For example, the platypus lays eggs and spends time in water. This DOES NOT mean it’s a fish. The platypus lactates (produces milk for its young) and therefore is not a fish, but a mammal.
Producing your own body heat does not make you a mammal. The ability to lactate makes you a mammal (and, yes, men ARE still mammals. They have a mammary ridge, too, and can grow breasts). Therefore, just because a penguin is warm blooded does not mean it’s a mammal. It’s still a bird.
Birds were descended from a group of reptiles, yes, BUT since a birds current characteristics are different the characteristics that present day reptiles have, they are two different groups.
